Tallahassee Neighborhoods, Locations and Districts

(Tallahassee, Florida - FL, USA)

Tallahassee is centered on the downtown district, with the majority of roads being based on a grid pattern, making the city easy to navigate. While many of the attractions are located in this district and other nearby locations, visitors to Tallahassee will also find the Park Avenue National Register Historic District worthy of a visit, for its turn-of-the-century buildings and quieter atmosphere.

The districts and neighborhoods around the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University and the Florida State University ensure a lively kick to the otherwise laid-back city. It is in these areas where you will find plenty of cheer and cheerful eateries, restaurants and nightspots.

Downtown District

Downtown Tallahassee is dominated by what some consider an unsightly monstrosity, the New Capitol Building, which sits next to the Old Capitol Building. Shadowing over the square mile district, this building is a useful landmark in navigating your way around the city. Designed on a grid, the downtown district also encompasses Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, which is surrounded by bustling eateries, bars, coffee shops and interesting retailers that thrive with student activity. Downtown is home to the city's main bus and train stations, as well as the Civic Center and the Leon County Courthouse.

East Tallahassee

The east side of Tallahassee contains various attractions, including the Hilaman Park Municipal Golf Course; while farther to the east are Upper Lake Lafayette, Piney Lake and Edward's Wildlife Area. This district is home to the city's biggest shopping mall, Governor's Square Mall, and easy access to the downtown neighborhood for those who want to stay away from the hustle and bustle of the city center.

Frenchtown

Primarily a residential district and encompassed by Bronough Street to the east, Seventh Avenue and Alabama Street to the north, Woodward Avenue to the west and Tennessee Street to the south, Frenchtown is located northwest of downtown Tallahassee. Offering some of the oldest homes in the city, the Frenchtown district is characterized by single story buildings with tin roofs, dating from the early decades of the 1900s, which sit side by side with modern businesses.

Park Avenue National Register Historic District

Of great interest to those with a taste for historical homes, the Park Avenue area is the oldest part of Tallahassee city, encompassing seven parks and several period homes. The western section is given over to some of the city's oldest cemeteries, while many of the houses you will see here are listed on the National Register of Historical Places.
